2026 Field Preview

A handicap-weighted first look at the Orlando board: both sides ranked top-to-bottom, where the pressure lives, and the opening betting line.

Rush / Carson

Ronnie Rush on the left. John Carson on the right. The board is basically dead even on paper, which means the captains are going to matter.

Opening line

Team Carson opens as the slightest favorite

The raw team averages are separated by 0.5 index points — close enough that this is less “better team wins” and more “who steals the middle of the card.”

Ash’s book

Initial read: this is a knife fight, not a mismatch

The first thing that jumps off the sheet is how balanced the two sides are. Team Carson grades out at 9.1 average index; Team Rush is at 9.6. That is basically a coin flip before pairings, course fit, and pressure get involved.

Carson has the cleaner top-end shape. Kerry McIntee, Kyle Shuman, Jon Stephens, Brandon Ripley, Garry Copple, and John Carson give that side a scary six-man ceiling. If Carson can front-load the right pairings and avoid wasting low indexes against Rush’s weaker slots, there is a real path to banking early points.

Rush is built differently. The top is still nasty — Eric Cunningham, Shon Ross, Scott Tilson, Roy Basham, Rob Dean, and Ryan Arbogast can absolutely punch first — but the side’s real danger is that the middle feels more match-play annoying than the average suggests. Rich Eberhardt, Rick Govea, Jeff Deitiker, Ronnie Rush, Rick Hancock, and Scott Campbell are exactly the type of players who can turn tidy projections into “how the hell are we 2 down?” by the turn.

The swing zone is the 7-to-13 index band. That is where most of the board lives, and that is where captain decisions can buy half-points. Carson probably wants controlled chaos: lean on its elite top, keep the high-handicap players out of exposed singles spots, and force Rush to answer with depth. Rush wants friction: ugly matches, long holes, and pressure on Carson’s estimates.

My opening number is Team Carson -115 on the moneyline and Team Carson -0.5 on the spread. Not because there is a giant talent gap — there isn’t — but because Carson’s top-six average is a hair stronger and that matters in match play if the board gets paired intelligently. Tiny edge. No victory laps. Bring snacks and emotional support bourbon.
